I'm calling for the creation of an RPG Maker Squad who's job it is to research and implement how the RPG Maker products and community can be used to make a Golden Sun Game.

1) How many among us do we have who has access to RPG Maker software?  Which software do you have, and how much experience do you have with it?

2) How do the different versions of the software compare with each other?  The newer ones might be better, but the older ones might have more documentation and tutorials.  What are the best way to get the different software?  A friend of mine recently got RPG Maker on a Summer Steam Sale.

3) This video was posted a few weeks ago, showing an amazing recreation of GS using RPG Maker VX.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BuasdhWJRe0

Can we find out more about this user, and whether he's created forum topics talking about his work?  Figure out the best way to communicate with him, and figure out what expertise one would need to understand, and then continue his work (should he drop the project).

But if he's already doing an awesome job, and he's willing to share his work and altered engine with the community, then what the RPG Maker Squad needs to do is *not* ask for his help, but instead offer their help to him.  Because when he succeeds, we all succeed.

And by being helpful, I think we'll also make a better impression, and improve the chances of others joining up with us.

I can do the introduction talk, since he is from my country.

By the way, I think we shoul start gathering all sprites, maps, tiles etc. we can. This should be easy, I think...

@RPG Maker: If it's a paid program, looks like I'll have to find some free method of getting it.

@KyleRunner: Sounds good. ; Easy with Spriter's-resource? Or with the editor? (Or both?)

@ Kyle
There are already plenty of good sprite repositories out there (just google "Golden Sun Sprites"), and there's not much more for us to do on that front.  I think we should talk about sprites and stuff in its own thread, and only when we're actually ready to them.

And if we do add more work on sprites, we should probably contribute to existing archives, rather than go through the hassle of setting up our own.

@ Tea

I have experience with RPG Maker XP from years ago.  There are tonnes of way to snag a copy without paying for it. Saturos may have some advice.

However, I'm not going to contribute very much to the RPG side of things, and instead focus on my love2d/lua coding efforts.  That's just a choice I'm making.  I think we'll have more than enough people working on the RPG Maker, especially if you can recruit native help from the RPG Maker forums.  And so I'd encourage you to do whatever you feel like doing, even if it's not exactly on the same page as everyone else.

If we can get a couple people working on RM XP, a couple on RM VX, and a couple on other stuff, then I think that's a good way to keep us all engaged, and not have all our eggs in one basket.

-Oh whoops. I forgot about that time I found an archive of all those graphics on that one site... http://www.goldensun-syndicate.net/sprites/  So yeah, all the work there is already done... (Not sure if it includes unused sprites, though... Like the Link sprite... But I'll take a look soon enough, I guess?) Just got to download it, that's all.

-@RPG Maker: I thought there would be, but I never actually Googled for it.  I'm guessing no matter what RPG Maker we end up using, there's going to be some obvious way of obtaining it for free, right?

It was SO easy the get '"an inexpensive copy" of the XV Ace version...

@Images: well, I have this package here, but I can't find any "ground tiles"...

There are no appropriate tilesets for Golden Sun. (Even in GS's data...) You'll have to make them yourself with the resources from the game?

Here are the methods that I know of:
-Rip them from Atrius Editor.
-Rip them from VBA. Either from in-game... (Using Ctrl+1-4 to turn on and off separate layers.), or from the Tile Viewer. Unfortunately, this method isn't recommended because of animating tiles.

Or just Google "Golden Sun Tile Set"

Alternatively, if we're doing a location that hasn't been seen before, we'd be making custom stuff anyway, so...  Frankly, I don't think the tile sets are that important, and if it is, we already know Joaos is interested in the same thing.

But changing up tiles is probably going to be the easiest part, which is why I say leave it be unless you have nothing else to do.

You'll have to make them yourself with the resources from the game?

I think you're the only one here who has the expertise to do any of that.  So if you feel that's what should be done, go for it.

But otherwise, I say let's use whatever tile set is easiest.

UPDATE

I'm downloading the trial version of RM VX Ace just so I know what it looks like, and I'll rely on
http://www.rpgmakervxace.net/topic/197-rpg-maker-vx-ace-trial-workarounds/
if I need to help figure out how to do stuff like scripting and such.

Atrius did post the world tileset here: http://forum.goldensunhacking.net/index.php?topic=1363.105

But the resolution is very low.

@Googling: Yeah, that might work, but I don't know if all the tilesets are available that way. (Or if it includes all the needed tiles for the current maps.) I'm also not sure about whether we have permission to use those tilesets others may have made? Hm?

http://rmrk.net/index.php?topic=26437.0 = I see 10 tilesets we could grab here, though. *Clicks and gets a File Not Found*

It should be rather simple for a novice to understand (I think.): I was implying that you should use the PrntScrn button on your keyboard. (That saves a copy of your screen to your clipboard.) Ofcourse, if you do Alt+PrntScrn, you will get the active window instead. ; Then you can paste it to a paint document and start messing around! (If ripping from Tileset section of Atrius's editor, or in the Tile viewer of VBA... you'll have to look for the correct palettes...)

@Atrius's Tileset: Yep, but there was also a tileset for the waterfalls, one for snow, and some other one, I think.

We do.
Well, I did find 6 on Spriter's-resource... But that's not much... Perhaps we should collect the necessary tilesets we find so that we can use them later on?

@Saturos: Thanks!
MaxiPower: Not really... He seems to only come once in awhile... I bet you can find him somewhere offsite, though... Not sure where.

Oh you guys are talking about the overworld sprites.
Well I got the 8100x8100 pixels map from TLA(yeah I thought it was 9000 first) which shows every type of tile, but the animations look strange. If someone knows how to make such a map, and fixing the animations and snow, then you can just rip them this way.

(In the attachment is a thumbnail of the map, because the real file is 10Mb  Happy)

Agillity/Speed in most RPG games is better then Attack/Force/power.
Spoiler for Hiden:
That is only when Defence is a linear division fuction. Example: When you strike with two daggers  (one does 120 damage the other 100) and the def makes every damage divide by 50 it does not differ from when you strike with one big sword (dealing 220 damage). When the defence is linear substraction, you want the highest damage output as possible, to maintain a low percentage of damage loss to defence.

I like some of his map ideas so can we use them.
(Did he gave permission to use his maps on topic?)
Some tilesets http://z12.invisionfree.com/RmxpCommunity/ar/t57.htm
I wish to import another map in rpg xp but then realised there are
some formats so Width and height dimensions.Does someone know?

Luna_blade: @Saturos: Your english exams?
Teawater: Can't remember exactly what shae of yellow it was, so not sure it would be too close or not.
Teawater: @KoP: Wouldn't Shiny Gold be for the Sol Clan?
Salanewt: Oh wait, tag doesn't work down here. But yeah, how is your hack going Jamie?
Salanewt: [me] considers giving him the Sol Blade...
Salanewt: Oh my. To be honest though, I'd be more likely to give Briggs stuff from later regions; him being a pirate from another continent and all.
JamietheFlameUser: How not to design boss fights: give human-type bosses stats and equipment on par for what the Editor says their level is and what equipment is available where they're from. You get stuff like an actually scaled to level 21 Briggs with a Great Sword, Silver Plate, Silver Helm, Vambrace, and Leather Boots. God, that was BS.
Saturos: Wow first part of exam is ower (in english) tomorow speaking part.
JamietheFlameUser: Eh, I didn't know the exact chance of Curse screwing you over. Still, that 6% chance to fail to act at all could screw you over when it matters most. The obvious solution, of course, is to stick that armour on a character who doesn't do anything but spam attack moves anyway.
leaf: ...assuming I'm remembering the chance of curse taking effect correctly as 25%
Today at 07:09:50
leaf: in fact, you get two turns the majority of the time (~56%), and only completely fail to act ~6%, the remainder of the time getting one action
Today at 07:07:49
leaf: I like that stealth armor buff. it wouldn't make sense to do that with the clerics ring available, but if you remove that, it's actually an interesting item. On average, you get ~1.5 turns per round. it's potentially very strong, but carries risks
Today at 07:04:59
leaf: lol
JamietheFlameUser: Reading the Venus Psynergy topic and 'lol'ing at Role's reaction to a very simple spell idea I'd had (and still think is awesome), where rock explodes out of the ground from a single point in a focused, cone-shaped burst. Role read me the riot act about not combining elements again. lol.
JamietheFlameUser: Well, one thing I came up with that was actually potentially cool is a modification to the Stealth Armour. I gave it +1 turns, under the assumption that the Cleric's Ring would be removed. You might get 2 actions that round, or 1 action, or maybe no actions at all! RNG at its finest.
Knight of Purgatory: Nice orange text kain. Maybe it should be a shiny gold
Today at 06:03:40
leaf: I concur. There isn't much I'd consider worth salvaging from dc in terms of work done, but reading the old threads can be quite amusing
Today at 06:01:48
JamietheFlameUser: LOL I'm looking at the DCrisis Items/Equipment section. Role and I were both so immature about it (me especially) that it's hilarious in hindsight.
Knight of Purgatory: Then i think i'll take the entire shop, item and equipment section
Yesterday at 23:25:55
Teawater: @Kain: That's certainly nice to know. :)  Poetry time, I go.  Eventually, things will be in automation. As long as there's no procrastination. In the future, say hello to Mr. Name Charger. Don't worry, it's not a Danger. There'll also be Mr. Clan Swapper.  It might make people hyper..... (Or does the best refer to something else? Like the badge shop?)
